The rings
When Joel was deciding on how to propose, he knew he wanted a special ring for Heather: one that had a story, had some history (ideally family stones), and that Heather would love. He wasn't able to find anything in stores that felt just right, so he took a different route. He proposed with a ring he knew she'd love, and then together, we designed a ring and matching wedding band. Joel had recently read an article about someone who worked with Dani Epstein to create a ring and then had it 3D printed and cast, that sounded like a great idea and Heather would love to be part of the process too! Heather's nana gifted her with her engagement ring, and its center stone was incorporated into the design. We first printed the final design in plastic to confirm fit, and then Joel ordered the smaller gems online. After a few adventures learning about the jewelry manufacturing industry in Toronto we've ended up with a gorgeous custom ring!
Together, we found a ring for Joel which combines Japanese mokume gane (folded precious metals) with Damascus steel (folded steel, metalurgically interesting and very durable).
In the end we both ended up getting 'backup' silver rings as well, since our lives tend to be rather active and unscripted. Heather's is a replica of the custom engagement ring with semiprecious stones and Joel's is silver and steel.
